Building a Cave

A cave is something different from a dungeon. The cave does not go on and on and on, down into the underworld of Minecraft, but has one definite entrance and exit, and is like a room. The building process is a mixture of building a house and a hideout, but there are differences as well. The caves close to your starting position are generated randomly, and to make a good cave you should have a good starting point. Therefore, whether you decide to take shelter in a cave, really depends on the environment you are in. If there are no caves, you wouldn't begin to build a mountain out of dirt and stone, to build a cave under it afterwards!

When you start a new world, begin by looking for caves you can live in, and believe me, there are differences between the quality of the caves generated at game startup: Good caves have:
  • Only one entrance, with a pretty small opening to the rest of the map. This will decrease how much you have to modify the cave to make it completely safe!
  • A relatively flat floor. Nobody uneven floors.
  • Relatively large. This will decrease your need of expanding your cave.
When you have found a satisfying cave, begin removing one or two layers of stone from the back wall (if you don't have any material in your inventory). With this stone, build a wall in front of the opening of the cave, to make it smaller. Do this until you only have a 2x1 space left. This is where you can fit the door for your cave.
On the inside of your cave you can now start expanding into the mountain, and begin making separate rooms and possibly a mineshaft going down. You can also dig a tunnel right through the mountain, so you do not have to go around or over ever time you are going from your cave to your mineshaft or other things you have / are planning on building.
