If you decide on building a house, you will need a lot of materials. There are, however, simple ways of decreasing the costs of your house:
1. Build economically. You do not need to complete corners on your house, and this saves you a lot of material early in the game. It also looks nicer to not have the corners, as you get a "rounded" edge (as if anything is round in Minecraft). If you are confused, watch this:
2. Dig your house down into the ground: This means you do not have to have material for the bottom block of your house. Your house will be the same size on the inside, but you have saved (width of your house x depth of your house) materials!
It is also important to have a way of getting down into your mine during night-time, as there are monsters lurking right outside your door! If your house is small, create a 1x1 shaft down into the ground, but make sure you have ladders ready, as you can only jump one block (as I'm sure you've figured out by now).
If you have a larger house, you can build a 'staircase' going down to your mine. do this by first digging out one block. In front of this, dig out two downwards. After that dig out three downwards, then continue digging out three blocks, going one block deeper every time.
To be able to see outside, you can simply create a hole in your wall. This hole can be replaced with a glass block later in the game, but for now it will do. Be aware though, that skeletons can shoot arrows through the hole, but their accuracy is pretty bad from a distance. If you get hit, just cover up the hole!
You can expand your house later in the game, but for now, I recommend not not build too large, as this takes up a lot of materials. Concentrate on your mineshaft instead.
